Backgrounder: Major attacks in Afghan capital in 2014

KABUL, Sept. 16 -- Three NATO soldiers were killed while 13 Afghan civilians wounded when a suicide car bombing targeted a NATO-led ISAF convoy in central Kabul on Tuesday. About 17 civilian cars and several military vehicles were also destroyed or damaged in the attack claimed by the Taliban insurgents.

The following is the listing of major attacks in Afghan capital of Kabul since January this year.

On Aug. 20 -- One ISAF soldier died after a man attacked him with a knife in Kabul airport road.

On Aug. 10 -- Four civilians were killed and 35 were injured as a suicide car bomb targeted an ISAF convoy in western Kabul.

On Aug. 5 -- U.S. army Major General Harold J. Greene was killed and 16, including a German and an Afghan general, were wounded when an Afghan army soldier opened fire in a military academy in western Kabul. The attacker was also killed.

On July 22 -- Four Nepalese security guards were killed in a suicide bombing which targeted a foreign military camp in northern Kabul.

On July 2 -- Eight Afghan army air force personnel were killed while 13 people wounded in a suicide bombing on army bus near Kabul University.

On June 6 -- A suicide bomber targeted presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah's convoy in western Kabul, killing 10 civilians and wounding 52 others. Abdullah escaped the attack.

On April 24 -- Three American doctors were killed in a shooting in a civilian hospital in western Kabul.

On April 2 -- A suicide bomber targeted the Interior Ministry building, killing six police and injuring three other officers.

On March 29 -- Six suicide bombers were killed and two police wounded when the attackers targeted the country's election headquarters in eastern Kabul.

On March 28 -- Two Afghan civilians were killed as five suicide bombers attacked a U.S. guest house. Nearly 20 foreigners escaped unhurt the firing and a car bomb.

On March 25 -- Five people, including a provincial council candidate, were killed as Taliban raided an election sub-office in Dar-ul-Aman vicinity.

On March 20 -- Nine civilians were killed in Taliban attack in Kabul Serena Hotel. Four attackers were killed by security forces.

On March 11 -- A foreign journalist named Nils Horner was shot dead in central Kabul.

On Feb. 10 -- Two U.S. security advisers were killed in a suicide car bombing near Kabul's main prison.

On Jan. 26 -- A suicide bomber targeted an army bus, killing four people and injuring 22 others.

On Jan. 17 -- Three gunmen stormed Lebanese Restaurant in downtown Kabul, killing 21 people, including 13 foreigners.

On Jan. 12 -- Two policemen were killed and 21 others wounded when a suicide bombing hit a police bus.

On Jan. 5 -- A blast took place close to Camp Eggers of the NATO-led coalition forces, causing no casualties.
