MANILA, Nov. 21 -- A Japan-bound All Nippon Airways jet made an emergency landing at an airport in the Philippine capital region of Metro Manila on Friday morning, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said.

CAAP said All Nippon Airways flight NH950 departed the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) at 9:54 a.m. local time but was forced return to the airport half an hour after it took off due to smoke in the jet's cockpit.

"An initial report said that after 5 miles on air, the pilot requested Manila tower for an emergency landing due to smoke in the cockpit and safely landed at 10:19 a.m.," the state agency said.

On board the aircraft were 174 passengers, including an infant and 10 crew members, including two pilots and eight flight stewards.

CAAP said the plane, a Boeing B767 type aircraft, landed safely at runway 0/64. Two aircraft accident investigators were immediately dispatched by the state agency to determine the cause of the incident.
