The first adaption of Tibetan opera Padma Obar, one of the eight traditional operas in Tibet, debuted in Lhasa, June 8, 2013, according to Chinanews.com.
The opera is a part of the project of adapting the eight traditional Tibetan operas by the Cultural Department of Tibet in the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).
The Tibetan opera is one of the most time-honored operas in China with a history of over 600 years. Known as the "living fossil" of ethnic theatrical art, the Tibetan opera is quite popular among Tibetans and has far-reaching influence at home and abroad.
Tibetan opera was put on the world heritage list of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2009.
