People’s Daily Online: Could you please tell us what corporate social responsibility program does your company have and which one in your opinion has the most impressive or the most influence.

Wee Siew Kim: Then, let me deal it in two areas, the external and internal. The external part, I would say that one key program is the colour way of love, which talks about hope schools. It is important as it is a platform which we can not only engage with our employees but also bring external partners. From the last five years of our execution of this ‘colour, way of love’ program, we can see the real benefits, especially as seen from the reactions of the recipients of our assistance.

From interaction with our employees and from our corporate partners, we find that everybody has a strong endorsement of the program, and to our engagement of the local community that we reach out to. They are also very happy to receive us. So as such, I see a conducive environment that we can actually grow this program, that comes back to the several points of how do we feel about the key attributes, which is effectiveness, motivational, scalable, these are the things I think the ‘colour, the way of love’ is able to do. And of course, externally, we have two big communities that we try to reach out to, the young children and the elderly and the poor.

We have another program in the probably the biggest cities, to our partnership with the habitant of humanity, we reach out to elderly, the poor who otherwise may be neglected for various reasons.

We go to their homes and during major festivals, such as mid-autumn festival, our employees donate their moon cakes to the homes, and they go out to the homes and bring cheers with the moon cakes.

For us, as a employee care thing, we give moon cakes to our employees, but some of them in turn say that : “no I do not want the moon cakes, give the moon cakes to people who are not just eating a piece of moon cake, it will bring extra cheer to them, because there is the feeling that someone cares.” I think that is more than money can buy. It will bring the good will and joy to people otherwise that are left out in certain festivals. That is the external part.

Then the internal part, things like the resource, saving programs we are doing. I see this important as we always talk about environment, but what can we do to about environment? As environment is so big, we can only do our part. And we narrow it down, if we can save electricity, we can save water, and we can save raw material usage. And year by year, it not only save money for company, but actually make sure that we keep a lot more resource for generations to come. One example is that we set about setting target every year is to reduce the amount of electricity and water cost per kilogram of paint we output.

We set targets to force our people to think. Because every year electricity and water prices are going up, so we want them to save against the trend of inflation, which forces us to think if there is another way to do things. I was very pleased when I reviewed the results last year. We exceeded the target we set for water and electricity savings, per kilogram of paint. We save in excess of 15% versus the previous year, which to me was an astounding achievement considering that prices have gone up in the same period. So these are not only things we just talked about, we are committed to do, and the very reassuring feedback I get is that when we set a target, even if it was a tough target, it gets people together and think how to achieve it.

It is not only important because it saved a couple of cents for the company, but because by doing so, by doing things that is consistent with our CSR objectives, consistent with environment, and consistent with our commitment to the environment. It comes back to what I started from. How do all these affect my employees? Whether I can affect my employees through all these activities, and give them a new mind-set of waste. How to eliminate waste, how to cut waste, not only at work but at home. Overall, I think all 6000 plus employees of Nippon Paint China, if everybody has this mindset, I think we have done our part for the environment.
