Xiang Zhixiang, 52, is a substitute teacher in Huanglong Primary School at Huangwei Town in Yuexi County, east China’s Anhui Province. This disabled man, walking on crutches, has worked for 28 years in this school with only seven students.
Xiang has become the only teacher in Huanglong Primary School since 1985. He teaches all the subjects. However, he is still a substitute teacher up to now. Even though he earns little, he works very hard. It is not convenient for the students to go to school and come back home in mountain areas, thus Xiang provides rooms for the students who live far away from school. He cooks meals and washes clothes for them too.
Xiang suffered polio when he was only one year’s old and the disease affected his two legs. Teachers and schoolmates helped him a lot when he studied in school. After his father’s death, this unmarried man has no other family members left. Xiang feels happy to be with children every day. “They are considerate, and help me do lots of things,” Xiang said. Many students who graduated from this school will come back to visit Xiang from time to time.
