BEIJING, Dec. 19 -- Top Chinese legislator Zhang Dejiang on Thursday called for better publicity for the National People's Congress (NPC) to increase public confidence and bring the system up to date.

Zhang, chairman of NPC Standing Committee, was speaking at the office of the biweekly periodical "National People's Congress of China", an official publication of the NPC since January 1994.

Zhang said that the philosophy of President Xi Jinping had led NPC reports in a new direction. A new situation, greater public expectation and NPC progress meant new demands for NPC publicity.

He reiterated that NPC publications should be politically correct, lead the public opinion, and encourage other media reports events in innovated ways.

Zhang appealed to all staff of the periodical to push legal awareness in their work, including legislation, supervision and delegates' work.
