Variety was provided when a Chinese volunteer from the audience was dressed in a kilt – not one of the modern commercial design, but a traditional plaid, a garment made of a single huge piece of cloth which is folded, wrapped around the waist, and draped over the shoulder. It looks so much more striking and romantic than the modern version. The honours were provided by Peter Kinloch Anderson of the traditional Edinburgh clothing company Kinloch Anderson, who made the trip from Shanghai to take part in the show. Kinloch Anderson are currently establishing a business in Shanghai providing quality clothes to the Asian market.

The evening would not have been complete without a piper, who came in the form of Ben Casey, all the way from Australia. Ben is an accomplished highland dancer, and as well as his dramatic piping he performed a traditional Scottish sword dance – not something that the Chinese in the audience are likely to have seen before.

To end the first half of the concert Katie was joined on the stage by the Dulwich College Beijing Middle School Choir, who sang (The Bonnie Banks) of Loch Lomond, a song whose melody is well known in China as it has been adopted for a traditional Chinese song.
