Xinjiang starts water diversion for China's longest inland river

URUMQI, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Friday began discharging water from a reservoir into the Tarim River, China's longest inland river, as part of an ongoing ecological conservation project in the region. The gates at the Daxihaizi Reservoir were opened, releasing a torrent of water into the Tarim River, which runs 1,321 km along the rim of the sparsely populated Tarim Basin.

Jade cross discovered in Nestorian relics site in China's Xinjiang

URUMQI, March 21 (Xinhua) -- After two years of excavation, a batch of important cultural relics -- including a well-preserved jade cross -- was unearthed at the relics site of a Nestorian monastery in Turpan, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Nestorianism, or Jingjiao in Chinese, was the earliest form of Christianity introduced to China.

Senior political advisor of Xinjiang under probe

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Dou Wangui, a senior political advisor of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is under disciplinary and supervisory investigation, according to an official statement on Wednesday. Dou, vice chairperson of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, is being investigated by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision for suspected serious violations of laws and regulations.
