Lebanese leaders have claimed that the Lebanese resistance guerrilla group Hezbollah, or Party of God, should not be listed as a terrorist group, As Safir newspaper reported on Thursday.

During a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Vincent Battle Wednesday evening, Lebanese National Assembly (parliament) President Nabih Berri said that the resistance in Lebanon and the intifada, or uprising, in the Palestinian territories could not be classified as terrorist movements.

Berri was referring to the list of 22 terrorist organizations released recently by the United States, in which Hezbollah is included. Washington has demanded that the assets of these groups be frozen by all countries.

Berri admitted there was "a great difference in points of view concerning resistance."

Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, who met the U.S. ambassador later on Wednesday, also expressed Lebanon's position on Hezbollah.

"I want to make it clear that the Arab foreign ministers' meeting held recently in Doha has stressed that resistance should be differentiated from terrorism. This is Arab countries' position as well as Lebanon's stand," he said.

During the meeting in Doha, Qatar, early October, foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Conference called for tackling terrorism and distinguishing terrorism from legitimate national struggle against foreign occupation.
