A celebration was held Saturday in the Great Hall of the People to mark the 20th anniversary of cooperation between the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA) and U.S.-based Educational Service Exchange with China (ESEC).
Present at the ceremony were Li Guixian, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Wan Xueyuan, director of the SAFEA, and Dr. Danny Yu, president of the ESEC.
Li said that the ESEC, since it forged ties 20 years ago with SBFEA, has cultivated many personnel for China in the fields of higher education, science, culture, medical care, international trade and law, rural poverty-relief and special education.
The ESEC has witnessed the great achievements China has made since it carried out the opening-up policy in 1978, Li added.
He pointed out that the Chinese government was fully appreciative of the efforts made by the ESEC, and conferred the "friendship awards" to many foreign experts. He extended his hope that the ESEC would continue contributing to the Sino-U.S. friendship.
He believed that more and more higher education institutes in remote areas of China will take advantage of the ESEC help now that China has officially entered the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Danny Yu said the ESEC will continue to help China invite more foreign experts and train more local people.
The ESEC, as a non-profit organization, was founded by some American-Chinese in the U.S. state of California in 1981. It has given 520 English training courses, appointed more than 1,000 English teachers to 91 higher education and scientific research institutes in 23 municipalities and autonomous regions, and organized 150 international business courses in 15 municipalities and autonomous regions training over 3,600 people.
