Xinjiang Continues to Lead China in Cotton Output
The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region retained the rank of China's leading cotton producer thisyear with the output reaching 1.57 million tons, up 4.7 percentover last year's figure, as a result of widespread use of new strains of cotton seed and modern cultivation techniques.

Stood first for several years
The region stood first in China for several consecutive years in terms of the total cotton output, unit output, export and commodity ratio.
1.114 million hectares
This year, Xinjiang expanded the acreage of cotton by 10percent, to 1.114 million hectares.
Natural disasters
Over one million hectares of cotton fields in Xinjiang were damaged by pests last summer. The situation was worsened by a cold air front from Siberia in July.
Modern cultivation techniques
Despite the severe natural disasters, the region secured abumper cotton harvest this year as a result of widespread use of new strains of cotton seed and modern cultivation techniques.
