Pakistan President Musharraf Visits Xi'an

Pakistan opposes separatism in China and is willing to fully cooperate with China in the restriction of extremist forces, said visiting Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

Pakistan opposes separatism in China and is willing to fully cooperate with China in the restriction of extremist forces, said visiting Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

Musharraf, who is on a five-day tour in China, also said Islam is a religion which advocates peace, and Pakistan will not allow extremist behavior.

The Pakistan president arrived at Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the second-leg of his tour on Saturday and met with Shaanxi Governor Cheng Andong.

The two agreed to further cooperation between Shaanxi and Pakistan as part of the efforts to promote Sino-Pakistani relations.

Musharraf said he was deeply impressed by the fact that all Chinese people have freedom of religion and that there is equality among all ethic groups, which is a reflection of the principles of peaceful coexistence and a culture of tolerance.

While in Xi'an the Pakistan guests visited a mosque which was built more than 1,000 years ago, and the site of the commencement of the Silk Road, an ancient route for merchants which has linked China with Pakistan and other areas in Asia and Europe for 20 centuries.

Musharraf began his five-day state visit to China on Thursday at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

He will also visit the construction site of the Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze River and Guangzhou, capital of south China 's Guangdong Province.
