The first batch of newly-trained air police to protect passengers on domestic flights within China will take to the skies this summer, it was reported Monday.

A training centre which has set up the first professional course in air security approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) plans to recruit 75 students for the spring semester, the Shanghai Youth Daily reported.

Students at the school in Shanghai will undergo brief military training before they learn about flight security, foreign languages and unarmed self-defence, the newspaper said.

Although the course takes three years to complete, most of the study will involve on-the-job training with airlines.

Many young men had already applied, thinking it would be a secure career as regulations require every plane have two security guards and many domestic airlines companies are expanding their routes and buying more planes, the report said.

Forty applicants had already passed recruitment interviews and the course would start on March 11, it added.

China announced it would put security guards on flights last year following the September 11 suicide attacks on the United States which used hijacked airliners.
