Jiangxi Province has decided to phase out fireworks production and shift to other undertakings, said Jiangxi Governor Huang Zhiquan at a press conference held by the ongoing annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC) Wednesday.

Fireworks production is a traditional industry in Jiangxi. More than 21 counties in the province engage in such production, with a total employment of more than 200,000.

But, over the past two years, the province has become notorious for a string of fireworks-related accidents, causing great losses in life and property.

The provincial government has decided to phase out the production, the provincial governor said. It will first of all shut factories without the necessary safe production conditions. Last year, the province already shut 60,679 workshops and 380 small fireworks factories. The remaining ones are required to strengthen management and oversight of safe production until all the fireworks enterprises are shut down.

The provincial government will see to it that fireworks producers would not lose their jobs and that they would continue farming or work in other factories and counties and townships that have financial difficulties due to stoppage of fireworks production would get financial support from the provincial government.

The phasing out of fireworks production will not affect the province's tax revenue as the proportion of this traditional industry made up less than five percent of the provincial GDP and less than two percent of the province's fiscal revenue, the provincial governor said.
