Hong Kong and France signed a wide-ranging Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation in information and communications technology, a Hong Kong government release said Thursday.

Secretary for Information Technology and Broadcasting Carrie Yau, representing the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government, welcomed the MOU as a step which would significantly strengthen the Hong Kong-French relationship.

"Through our concerted efforts, I am confident that the MOU will benefit the information and communications technology industries of both sides," she said.

She said as the Chinese Mainland is a member of the World Trade Organization now, Hong Kong IT and telecommunications companies, with their knowledge of the Mainland market, can be the strategic partners for their French counterparts to explore the huge mainland market.

France is Hong Kong's 10th largest trading partner. There are some 500 French companies in Hong Kong, and more than 130 of them have established regional headquarters or regional offices here.
