FM Spokesman on Result of Pakistan Referendum

The result of the Pakistan Referendum has embodied the Pakistani people's advocation and support for Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan here Thursday.

The result of the Pakistan Referendum has embodied the Pakistani people's advocation and support for Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan here Thursday.

"As a friendly neighbor of Pakistan, we are pleased with the result," Kong said.

He noted that Chinese President Jiang Zemin had sent a congratulatory message to Musharraf.

"We believe, under the leadership of President Musharraf, Pakistan will continue to maintain social stability, ethnic harmony and economic growth. All walks of life and parties in Pakistan would unify and make concerted efforts to create a more brilliant future," the spokesman added.

On Wednesday evening, Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Irshad Hassan announced that of the total cast votes in Pakistan's referendum, 98 percent were in favor of Musharraf for another five-year term of presidency.
