A special investigation panel sent by the central government has arrived in Dalian to probe into the cause of an air crash that occurred Tuesday night in northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The panel consists of a vice secretary-general of the State Council; and heads of the Ministry of Communications, the General Administration of Civil Aviation, and the Ministry of Public Security.

Local officials are briefing the panel on the accident.

Relatives of crash victims, mostly local residents, have been accommodated in several hotels, anxiously waiting for any news.

The Chinese navy force stationed in Dalian has sent four ships to help salvage wreckage of the crashed plane.

A China Northern Airlines MD-82 passenger plane, carrying 112 passengers and crew, plunged into Dalian Bay less than 10 kilometers (6.215 miles) from the coast at around 21:40 Tuesday, soon after the captain reported a fire in the cabin to the ground control center.

The airliner took off at Beijing International Airport at 20:37 and was scheduled to land in Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport at 21:40.

More than 60 bodies have been found by press time. The rescue work is still going on.
