Hong Seok-hyun, chairman and CEO of the JoongAng Ilbo of South Korea, was elected chairman of the World Association of Newspapers on Wednesday. Mr. Hong is the first Asian to head the organization, which represents 18,000 publications from 113 nations.

His election at the association's 55th Annual Conference came as no surprise. When he was chosen as first vice president in June 2001, his ascension to the top post was virtually assured.

Mr. Hong will serve as president through May 2004.

"As the first WAN president from Asia, I am filled with a profound sense of responsibility to you, my colleagues and to this organization. My elevation to his post is due, in large part, to your recognition of Asia's growing influence on world affairs," Mr. Hong said in his acceptance speech.

"As your president, I will continue to support international gatherings and cooperation between publishers, journalists and newspapers on a large scale. I will do my utmost to create an environment in which we can celebrate our cultural diversity, in which we bridge ethnic divides, and in which we promote the highest standards of excellence in journalism," Mr. Hong said.

Mr. Hong holds a doctorate in economics from Stanford University. Prior to joining the JoongAng Ilbo as president and CEO in 1994, he worked at the World Bank, the Ministry of Finance and the Blue House, South Korea.
