Shooting erupted in a Milwaukee courtroom, Wisconsin, U.S., on Wednesday when a defendant just found guilty of murder grabbed a court bailiff's revolver and wounded him before being shot dead by a detective, police said.

The unidentified 20-year-old defendant leaped across the defense table and wrestled with the bailiff, snatching at his gun which fired into the officer's abdomen.

Witnesses said the weapon may have still been in the bailiff's holster when the shot was fired.

A police detective, who had worked on the case and was sitting in the courtroom beside prosecutors, drew his weapon and shot the defendant dead.

The 35-year-old bailiff's wound was not considered life threatening.

The shootout before a jury and Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jacqueline Schellinger took place in a courtroom inside a county building, adjacent to police headquarters.

The judge and jury retreated to the judge's chambers as police cordoned off the courtroom.
