Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Thursday in Tallinn that China is ready to work with the Estonian government and explore new ways of cooperation so that China-Estonia relations will grow smoothly.

Jiang made the remarks during a meeting with Estonian Prime Minister Siim Kallas. The Chinese president is on a state visit, the first by a Chinese head of state since the two countries established full diplomatic relations in 1991.

Over the past 10 years, China and Estonia have seen fruitful cooperation in areas of politics, trade, economy, culture and education, Jiang noted.

Jiang said he and Estonian President Arnold Ruutel had in-depth talks Wednesday, and reached consensus on the general orientation and guiding principles of the development of bilateral relations.

Estonian leader hopes to strengthen cooperation with China
Kallas said China's economic success has attracted attention across the world. He recalled China's recognition of and support for Estonia when it regained independence a decade ago.

The Estonian prime minister said his government has firmly upheld the one-China policy and will continue to do so, and will strengthen cooperation with China in various areas.

Estonia is now the biggest trading partner of China among the three Baltic countries Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Jiang said China is satisfied with this and hopes that the two nations can cooperate in forestry management, fishing industry, light industry and home appliances.

Kallas said Estonia, with fine port facilities, hopes to have closer cooperation with China in this area.

In another development, Jiang met with chairman of the Estonian parliament and former president before wrapping up his brief visit to Estonia.
