Indonesia Shares Only One Percent of Chinese Tourists

Despite the mutual agreement on tourism and culture signed by Indonesia and China in 1994, Indonesia shared only one percent of Chinese tourists travelling abroad.

Despite the mutual agreement on tourism and culture signed by Indonesia and China in 1994, Indonesia shared only one percent of Chinese tourists travelling abroad.

"How come? There are around 20 million Chinese tourists travelling abroad in 2002 and only 50,000 of them, equals to modestly one percent, have visited Indonesia," said Luther Barrung,marketing director at the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

He added that the Indonesian government expected 180,000 Chinese tourists to arrive here by the end of this year. For that purpose the government had expanded promotion program such as opening three-time Jakarta-Guangzhou flight route and issuing license for 88 travel agencies.

Separately, Minister of Tourism I Gede Ardika estimated that around 27 million Chinese have overseas trips every year, of whichneighboring Thailand accomodated one million while Malaysia and Singapore each 400,000.

"Chinese tourists made up only 0.75 percent of total Indonesia's foreign tourist arrival," Ardika was quoted by the Antara News Agency as saying.

Wisnu Sulaeman, chairman of the Indonesia-China Tousrism Commission, complained last week that 42 of 88 license holders didnot know how to run business in tourism, to become one of key factors impeding government's effort to attract tourists from China.
