China Men's, Women's Youth Basketball Teams Beat US Counterparts

Both China men'sand women's youth basketball teams upset their visiting US counterparts on Monday evening in Chengde, a well-known summer resort in northern China.

Encouraged by the cheering home crowd, the Chinese men's team edged out the Americans 105-101, while the Chinese women's side whitewashed their rivals 94-37.

At the invitation of the Chinese Basketball Association, the USmen's and women's all-star youth teams whose players were selectedfrom nine state universities visited China to gear up for the basketball world championships, the men's of which is set for August 29-September 8 in the United States, and the women's on September 14-25 in China.

The US women's side, with average age of 19 and average height of 1.87 meters, appeared obviously out of form in their first match against the home team whose average height is 1.85 meters, which might be caused by the big time difference.

Boasting several NBA players, the US men's team, with average age of 18 and average height of 2.06 meters, played an intense andluster match with the Chinese side whose average height is 1.97 meters. Many brilliant blocks and dunks caught audiences' eyes anddrew their applause.

The second round of the China-US basketball contests will be held on Tuesday in Tangshan, the city famous for its suffering of the devastating earthquake in 1976.
