A Russian military helicopter was shot down in Chechnya on Saturday with two crew members killed, Interfax quoted Russian Defense Ministry as saying.

The ministry spokesman Nikolai Deryabin said that the Mi-24 helicopter was subjected to fire and crashed at 15:45 Moscow summer time (1145GMT) on Saturday while it with another Mi-24 were accompanying an Mi-8 military transport helicopter that was delivering food to units operating in Chechnya's mountain regions.

The crewmembers aboard it did not survive and their bodies had been evacuated, he said.

A source in Combined Forces Group headquarters said the Mi-24 might have been brought down by a missile fired from a Strela portable anti-aircraft launcher. The helicopter fell two kilometers southwest of the village of Meskhety.

This is the second such air catastrophe in Chechnya within two weeks.

On August 19, a Mi-26 military transport helicopter was shot down by Chechen rebels with missile outside the Khankala military headquarters, near the regional capital Grozny, according to official conclusion. 118 people died while another 29 injured. Some of them are in serious conditions.
