Chinese Trade Union Leader Meets US Visitors

Exchanges and cooperation between trade unions in China and the United States are important for mutual understanding, Wei Jianxing, chairman of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU), said Monday in Beijing.

Wei, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, made the remarks in a meeting with a US trade union delegation headed by Andy Stern, vice president of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations.

Despite the different domestic conditions between China, the world's largest developing nation, and the United States, the world's largest developed country, Wei said, there is still a need for the trade unions and workers of the two countries to increase dialogue and communication for enhancing mutual understanding.

The Chinese trade unions are willing to push forward such exchanges and contribute to the growth of Sino-US constructive and cooperative relations, Wei said.

Stern said the visit will open doors for trade unions of the two countries to increase contacts, dialogue and communication.

He also gave high praise to the improved lives of Chinese workers during China's reform and opening-up drive.

The delegation is here at the invitation of ACFTU.
