China welcomes and supports the establishment of the Siniuju Special Administrative Region (SAR) by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said Tuesday.

Zhang made this remark at a regular press conference when asked to comment on the DPRK's recent announcement of the establishment of the Siniuju SAR.

Zhang said China welcomes and supports this new measure taken by the DPRK in the development of its economy.

China, traditionally a friendly neighbor of the DPRK, is willing to strengthen cooperation of mutual benefit, so as to promote the common development of both countries and the region at large, the spokeswoman said.

DPRK names governor
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) appointed Tuesday the governor of the newly-established Sinuiju Special Administrative Region (SAR), marking the official establishment of the SAR.

At a ceremony held at the Mansudae Assembly Hall here Tuesday afternoon, Yang Bin, President of the Holland Euro-Asia Group, was awarded a certificate of appointment by Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly.

The Sinuiju SAR was set up under a decree issued by the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly on Sept. 12.

Under its basic law, the Sinuiju SAR will be built into an international financial, trade, commercial, industrial, scientific, amusement and tourist center directly under jurisdiction of the central government. It will however have its own executive, legislative and judicial bodies and the legal system to be adopted by the SAR will remain unchanged for 50 years.
