The US envoy to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum said on Friday that the US regards the latest hostage-taking by Chechen rebels in Moscow as "a form of terrorism."

"Yes, clearly, we see that as a form of terrorism," Lawrence Greenwood, US ambassador to the APEC, said at a press conference held here.

But the ambassador did not elaborate why he thought the incident fits the US definition of a terrorist act.

This is the first official response from the US after a group of Chechen rebels held about 600 people hostage in a theater in Moscow on Thursday demanding Russian troops withdrawal from Chechnya, a Muslim-dominant Russian republic in the Caucasus region.

Moscow has condemned the hostage-taking as terrorism and Russian President Vladimir Putin has canceled a scheduled trip to attend the 10th APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting over the weekend so as to monitor the crisis at home.
