Yunnan Boosts Transport Links with China-ASEAN Free Trade Area Inmind
Yunnan Province, on the southern border of China, is boosting its international transport network in readiness for the proposed China-ASEAN free trade area.

At present, the province was developing air, land and water transport links with Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, said Xu Rongkai, governor of Yunnan.
Progress has been made in building the 1,800-km highway linkingKunming, capital of Yunnan, with Bangkok, the Pan-Asian Railway and harnessing the navigation channel on the Lancang-Mekong River.
China's Ministry of Communications and the Yunnan provincial government will allocate 20 billion yuan (2.4 billion US dollars) for the Kunming-Bangkok Highway, most of which within China's borders has been built or upgraded.
The State Council, the highest governing body of China, has decided to connect Yunnan's highway network with a road leading toLanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, to enlarge its road network tonorthwest China.
To date, 10 highways linking Yunnan with Vietnam and Laos have been opened to traffic, said Wu Zirun, deputy director of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Communications.
The province is speeding up construction of the 5,600-km Pan-Asian Railway which runs through Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and China.
Regarding air traffic, Yunnan has opened routes to Hanoi, Rangoon, Vientiane, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur which handle 400,000 passengers annually. The province plans to build a larger international airport in suburban Kunming.
The Lancang-Mekong River opened to commercial navigation in China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand in June last year.
