Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Wednesday dismissed as "totally baseless" the recent US charge that the Islamic republic seeks nuclear weaponry, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Speaking to reporters at the parliament, Khatami said "the US claims about Iranian nuclear activities are totally baseless."

"Iran is working under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and does not seek nuclear arms," the presidentstated.

Last week, the US government published some satellite pictures and accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapon ability. TheIranian government immediately rejected the US accusation.

Iran said its nuclear facilities are for peaceful use, and they are "totally transparent."

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi later invited the IAEA experts to inspect those nuclear facilities.

An IAEA spokesman has confirmed at Vienna that IAEA Secretary-General Muhammed el Baradei will visit Iran next February at the head of a group of international experts.
