Road Accidents Kill 438 During Thailand's New Year Holiday

The death toll in Thailand's road accidents reached 438 during the 5-day New Year holiday that began on Dec. 28, 2002, the Nation newspaper reported Thursday.

The death toll in Thailand's road accidents reached 438 during the 5-day New Year holiday that began on Dec. 28, 2002, the Nation newspaper reported Thursday.

Meanwhile, according to the statistics of The Public Health Ministry, 24,242 people were injured in the large number of traffic accidents during the holiday.

The statistics also showed that most of the highway deaths and injuries were reported in the Northeast, and the number of male victims was threefold that of females, the report said.

Apichart Mekmasin, director of the Public Health Ministry's Non-communicable Disease Department, pointed out that motorcycles this year had proved to be the main cause of road accidents - 90 percent of deaths stemming from motorbike mishaps and 84 percent of the injuries.
