One-third of Canadians believe the United States is currently the biggest threat to world peace, according to a new poll in Canada on Saturday.

The survey, conducted by Ipsos-Reid company, also finds that 52percent of Canadians say they would not approve of the United States taking military action to remove Iraqi President Saddam Hussein from power, as compared with 40 percent saying they would.

Six in 10 believe that Canada should provide assistance for any military action against Iraq only if the United Nations -- and not just the US -- decides it is necessary.

Only 15 percent of Canadians believe if the United States takes military action on its own against Iraq, without UN authorization, Canada should support the effort by providing military assistance.

One in five say that Canada should not provide any assistance to either the United States or the United Nations in the event of military action against Iraq.
