Chinese Cheng Becomes 3-golds Holder at Universiade

Cheng Xiaolei of China become the only athlete to win three gold medals at the individual events of the Tarvisio world universiade as she took her third short-track speed skating title on Saturday in Tarvisio of Italy.

22-year-old Cheng, winner of the women's 1,500m and 500m, won her third gold in the women's 1,000m race, beating host Italy's Marta Capurso to second and Kim Hye-kyung of South Korea third.

Li Ye defeated the two strong Canadians to take his first gold here in the men's 1,000m in 1:28.756. Jeffrey Scholten, the winner in Friday's 500m and two world-record holder, had to be the silver medalist with a time of 1:28.912 in the men's 1,000m. His fellow Daryi Rasmussen was a third finisher.

With day's victory, China took four golds, one silver and one bronze medals, all from the short-track speed skating event.

Russia continued its leading position at the medals standings with an aggregation of 10-9-8 after winning Saturday's two titles.

Ivan Alypov won the men's croos-country skiing 30-km mass start with a time of one hour 11 minutes and 25 seconds. Takeshi Mizobuchi of Japan took the silver in 1:11:29.2 with Loris frasnelli of Italy third in 1:11:29.9.

Russia also beat Slovakia 5-2 to win the men's ice hockey gold medal. Canada beat Italy for the silver.

The Swede Kristina Hultdin won the Alpine skiing women's slalomon Saturday in 1:28.21 to seal a gold, the Sweden's first at these games. Italian Claudia Morandini, who came behind from a seventh ranking in the first run, took the silver. Erika Hogan of the United States was awarded the bronze.

Dalsuke Murakami won Japan's fourth gold after taking the snowboard men's half-pipe title at Piancavallo. Murakami was followed by Wojciech Pajak of Poland. Hayato Doi, also from Japan took the bronze.

Annette Steinbauer of Germany defeated the Italian Alessia Follador to win the women's half-pipe in snowboard.

Beatrice Boglio won the third Italian gold medal after she took the gold medal in the women's combined.

The tiny girl from Turin, despite her sixth place in superG, was followed by Amanda Piries of Britain. Jana Staffenova of Slovakia was third.

Boglio will try to rank among the first places in the European Cup, in order to qualify for the World Cup.
