Eleven of the 15 members of the United Nations Security Council favor extending weapons inspections in Iraq, in support of Germany's position on the issue,a senior German government source said on Tuesday.

Germany was not alone in its position, the source noted, saying only Britain, Spain and Bulgaria have joined the United States in opposition to prolonging inspections.

His remarks came after France, Russia and Germany issued a joint statement on Monday calling for more efforts to disarm Iraq peacefully so as to avert a war in the Gulf.

He said Germany was working with France and other countries to seek tougher inspections in Iraq. They were considering sending more inspectors, improving intelligence gathering, creating a permanent UN representative for disarming Iraq and tightening trade controls.

Germany currently chairs the 15-member Security Council.

The Security Council has five permanent members: Britain, China,France, Russia and the United States.

Its 10 temporary members are Angola, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Chile,Germany, Guinea, Mexico, Pakistan, Spain and Syria.
