A memorial hall for Liang Qichao, one of China's leading bourgeois democratic reformers, was inaugurated Friday in north China's Tianjin City.

Liang (1873-1929), also a famous scholar, played a leading rolein the 1898 Reform Movement in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

On June 11, 1898, Emperor Guangxu adopted the reform ideas of bourgeois reformers Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, and announced reform policies in order to prevent a national crisis that would have seen China partitioned by imperialist powers.

The reform was carried out for only 103 days until September 21when Empress Dowager Cixi staged a palace coup d'etat. Emperor Guangxu was imprisoned.

Liang lived in Tianjin from 1915 to 1929.

The memorial hall, located on Minzu Road in the Hebei District in the city, comprised two parts, Liang's residence and studio.

With an area of 2,500 square meters, the hall was renovated with a governmental investment of more than 20 million yuan ( 2.4 million US dollars).

Many original historical archives, pictures as well as personalbelongings are on display in the hall.
