French telefilm firm makes documentary on Japan germ warfare crimes

French telefilm producer, Marathon, completed Friday its shooting of a documentary to expose the towering crimes of the notorious Unit 731 of Japan, in Harbin city, the capital of China's northernmost Heilongjiang province.

The documentary is expected to be shown shortly in 35 countriesaround the world, said Wang Peng, curator of the Harbin-based exhibition hall for exposing the crimes of Japan's Unit 731.

The documentary mainly covers the former bases of Unit 731, relevant written materials and photos, an irrefutable evidence of the heinous crimes of Unit 731, miniature germ warfare laboratories used by Unit 731 and crematoriums and animal-raising facilities built by Japanese intruders, which were used by Unit 731 in germ warfare test.

Two Chinese victims of Unit 731 were interviewed to recount thecrimes Japanese troops committed during the World War II.

Director Serge Viallet, who has produced a number of documentaries on World War II, described what he had witnessed in Harbin as "startling".

Wang Peng, the curator, said many European film and television producers had come to shoot telefilms or documentaries in Harbin to expose the history of germ warfare conducted by Japan's Unit 731 in Asian countries.

Unit 731 was part of Japan's invading Kwantung Army with headquarters based in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang. It was notorious for manufacturing materials for germ warfare.

According to historical records, Unit 731 experimented on more than 10,000 prisoners of war and civilians from China, the Korean Peninsula, Mongolia and the former Soviet Union.
