Japanese broadcasters eye tallest TV tower

Some major Japanese TV stations said Wednesday they have agreed to promote the construction of the world's tallest broadcasting tower in Tokyo.

Some major Japanese TV stations said Wednesday they have agreed to promote the construction of the world's tallest broadcasting tower in Tokyo.

The envisioned tower is expected to reach as high as about 600 meters, designed to facilitate the newly launched terrestrial digital broadcasting.

The stations are Japan Broadcasting Corp., or NHK, and five commercial stations based in Tokyo.

Japan started the terrestrial digital broadcasting on Dec. 1 inTokyo, Osaka and Nagoya cities. It plans to phase out analog broadcasting nationwide by 2011.

The 333-meter Tokyo Tower has served as a comprehensive broadcasting tower for television and radio stations since its launch in 1958.

Among the world's tallest towers, the CN Tower of Toronto, Canada, is 553 meters high, while the Ostankino Tower in Moscow is540 meters high.
