As leaned from China National Textile Industry Council (CNTIC) quota negotiation between China and the US on three kinds of textile has ended and the US starts to impose a 7.5 percent quota on three kinds of Chinese textile including stockinet, brassiere and gown. The quota is expected to last a year.

CNTIC says the US action is unfair to Chinese companies. The shift of American textile industry has begun years ago. The employment problem of American textile workers is caused by many factors including technological improvement and industrial readjustment. For the Americans Chinese textile is cheaper but of good quality. American importers and retailers also benefit from Sino-US textile trade. Moreover the number of American companies investing in China increases steadily in recent years. Much of the textile and garment is products of companies with American investment or of those who import American raw material to be processed for American companies and exported to the US. The restrictive measure will not only hurt American consumers but also harm the interests of American importers, retailers and companies with American investment.

Experts say now faced with the reality Chinese textile companies should spend more time on raising the added value of their products and continue to optimize product structure. In the meanwhile they should pay attention to the variety need of the market and actively expand their share in the domestic market that has huge potentials. Besides according to WTO's Agreement on Textiles and Clothing quotas imposed on Chinese textile export by other countries will be lifted by stages before 2005. The US International Trade Commission recently said by then most American textile and garment importers might choose China as supplier.
