China has decided to expand its trial use of fuel ethanol in nine provincial areas in a bid to curb consumption of gasoline and reduce automobile exhaust gas emission, official sources said.

A senior official with the State Development and Reform Commission said it will expand the trial in cooperation with sevenother government departments, including the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Commerce, and the State Environmental Protection Administration.

The areas where fuel ethanol, which is produced from grain, will be used as substitute for gasoline for automobiles are the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Henan and Anhui, as well as parts of the provinces of Hubei, Shandong, Hebei and Jiangsu, said the official.

China first began trial use of fuel ethanol on June 30, 2002 in three cities in Henan province, central China, and some cities in Heilongjiang province, northeast China.

The official said the trial use proves the fuel ethanol is suitable for use in China with social and environmental benefits.

The use of the fuel ethanol is a strategic move by the central government to promote sustainable economic and social development and environmental protection.
