Upsurge in HK jewelry exports to benefit international show

Hong Kong's jewelry exports recorded a strong growth in 2003, with shipments soaring by 17 percent to 2.85 billion US dollars, said Chairman of Hong Kong's Trade Development Council's (TDC) Jewelry Advisory Committee LeungSik Wah Tuesday.

This augurs well for the four-day Hong Kong International Jewelry Show 2004, which opened at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on Tuesday.

"Thanks to their aggressive sales and marketing efforts, Hong Kong's jewelers have been able to weather the storm last year. Hong Kong is now the world's third largest exporter of fine jewelry. Exports to major markets recorded a double-digit growth, " Leung said at the opening ceremony of the show.

A total of 1,380 exhibitors from 34 countries and regions take part in the exhibition, 15 percent up on last year.

Over a dozen countries and regions have their own pavilions to showcase their products from Belgium, the Chinese mainland, India,Israel Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Chinese Taiwan, Thailand and the United States.

The Designer Jewelry Galleria takes up a significant amount of space to showcase 32 designer labels, while the Watch and Clock Pavilion displays timepieces carrying Hong Kong and Taiwan brand names.

Over 40 buying groups from around the world are flying in for the exposition which is expected to see a record turnout of visitors.

This year's fair is again being organized by the TDC conjunction with the Hong Kong Jewelers' and Goldsmiths' Association, the Hong Kong Jewelry and Jade Manufacturers Association, the Hong Kong Jewelry manufacturers Association and the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's jewelry designers who are fast becoming a creative force to be reckoned with will be displaying their masterpieces atthe exhibition. The winning creations of this year's Hong Kong Jewelry Design Competition will be prominently displayed for visitors to view.

The TDC also joins hands with the Hong Kong police to enhance security of the show. An educational video program has been uploaded on the fair's web site to better-prepare exhibitors.
