China one of the most scientifically developed countries in the developing world

With the investment in sci-tech, innovations and the number of thesis in international publications all rising sharply, China is one of the leading countries in the developing world in terms of sci-tech strength.

With the investment in sci-tech, innovations and the number of thesis in international publications all rising sharply, China is one of the leading countries in the developing world in terms of sci-tech strength.

China has been increasing investment in science and technology since 1990s. The whole society spent more than 150b. yuan on research and development (R & D) in 2003, accounting for 1.32 percent of the GDP, compared with 12.534b. yuan and 0.68 percent of GDP in 1990.

In the past year, China's sci-tech circle performed its missions successfully and made innovations. It stood the ordeal of SARS outbreak and scored remarkable achievements in sci-tech reform and development. The successful manned space flight, another milestone in the history of China's sci-tech development, marks China is one of the world's top aerospace powers.

Sci-tech theses is the main form of the output resulting from sci-tech researches and provides a facet reflecting the sci-tech strength of a country. The number of China's sci-tech theses in international publications has been growing steadily. In 2003, China ranked the fifth in the world in this aspect. The presence of the first prize of the National Natural Sciences Award to some extent proved China's original creativity has upgraded. In 2003 patent applications from China outnumbered applications from abroad for the first time in eight years.

The competition between nations in the world now is not only focused on the discovery and creation of new knowledge, but also on the commercialization of sci-tech research results. New and high technologies are the engine to power the national economic growth. China's hi-tech industry keeps flourishing with its output valued at 2.75 trillion yuan in 2003, up 30.8 percent over the previous year. In the same year, the worth of tech contract in the national tech market topped 100b. yuan for the first time and amounted to 108.467b. yuan, 22.68 percent higher than the previous year.
