A symposium on the protection of copyright in the digital era opened on Monday in Hong Kong.

Over 250 representatives from government and educational institutions and copyright experts from the Asia-Pacific Region will exchange their views on the importance of seeking a balance between the protection of copyright and the scope of public access to information in the digital era.

Officiating at the opening ceremony, Stephen Selby, director of intellectual property in HK's Intellectual Property Department, said that digital media and the Internet are becoming increasingly important in academic research and publication.

Traditional copyright concepts pose numerous challenges to people who use the Internet as a tool for their day-to-day work in education. The symposium is intended as a platform for participants to share their views and experience about how to face these challenges in the digital era, added he.

The two-day symposium, held on March 15 and 16, is organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the Intellectual Property Department.

With headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the WIPO is one of the 16 specialized agencies of the United Nations system of organizations. It is dedicated to promoting the use and protection of works of the human spirit and enhancing the quality and enjoyment of life.
