The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday denounced the upcoming US-South Korea joint military exercises, warning of increasing its nuclear deterrent force.

"The increased military threat the United States poses to the DPRK will only compel us to increase our nuclear deterrent force both in quality and quantity as a corresponding measure," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The United States is planning to stage together with South Korea's "bellicose forces" two large-scale joint military exercises on March 22-28, one dubbed "Foal Eagle" and the other known as RSOI, or reception, staging, onward movement and integration, across South Korea, he said.

The spokesman said the joint military exercises are an undisguised challenge and betrayal to the sincere efforts made by the international community for a negotiated peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue over the Korean Peninsula.

"The DPRK is always keeping itself highly vigilant against the US negative approach towards negotiations and its hostile acts," the spokesman said, adding "the United States should ponder over the unpredictable consequences caused by its provocative acts."

Also on Friday, a spokesman for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland condemned the US-South Korea as aiming at invading the DPRK.

The DPRK has a defensive deterrent force, which is powerful enough to cope with any US preemptive nuclear attack, the spokesman said in a statement.
