NBS releases China Top 1,000 Industrial Enterprises list

The Department of Industrial and Transport Statistics of NBS (National Bureau of Statistics of China) screened out top 1,000 industrial enterprises in China based on statistical results of corporate industrial enterprises in 2003. Daqing Oil Field Corporation tops the list with a sales volume of 85.5524 billion yuan.

Qiu Xiaohua, deputy director-general of NBS, said during a statistics release conference held on June 2 that China Top 1,000 Industrial Enterprises was selected according to common international methods by comparing their sales volumes. It is one of the acts by NBS to service the society. In 2003 these 1,000 enterprises accounted for 36.8 percent of the sales volume and half of the profits among industrial enterprises above national level. They represent the leading force in the development of China's industrial economy.

The statistics show communications equipment, computer and other electronic equipment manufacturing industries, iron and steel enterprises, transport manufacturing industries represented by auto industry and power enterprises make up half of the China Top 1,000 Industrial Enterprises. State-owned enterprises (SOE) in the monopolized industries such as petroleum and telecommunication companies make up much of the list and rank among the leading group, whilst industries with full competition such as catering industry, commerce, consumer goods, hi-tech and innovative technology industries and manufacturing industries are composed of companies that are relatively small. SOEs and foreign-invested companies have an overwhelming advantage in terms of number whilst private-run companies are weak by comparison.

The statistics release activity of China Top 1,000 Industrial Enterprises was organized and undertaken by the Department of Industrial and Transport Statistics of NBS and the Talents Magazine and assisted by Capital Youth Reporter Association.

Five characteristics
China Top 1,000 Industrial Enterprises' development speed is fast with good quality of growth. In 2003 these 1,000 enterprises' realized sales volume and profits increased by 45.4 percent and 50.1 percent respectively, which were 17.1 and 7.4 percentages higher respectively than the average industrial growth rates.

Production and management efficiency is high and performance is good. These 1,000 companies had a per capita sales volume of 659,000 yuan and per capita profits of 52,000 yuan, which were 2.6 and 3.6 times that of average levels in the whole industry. Their profits per 100 yuan capital are 49 percent higher than the average level of the whole industry.

Industrial distribution shows prominence of chemical industry. Among China Top 1,000 Industrial Enterprises 178 companies are engaged in telecommunication, computer and other electronic equipment manufacturing industries and they lead other industries in rank. Those that rank after them are iron and steel companies. There are 107 of them. Transportation equipment manufacturing industries represented by auto industry rank the third and there are 102 of them. Power companies rank the fourth with 101 listed.

Geographical distribution shows apparent concentration in the southern regions. Among these 1,000 companies 719 are distributed in the southern regions, of which Guangdong accounts for 158, Jiangsu 118, Shandong 97, Shanghai 73 and Zhejiang 60. There are 180 companies located in the central regions and 101 in the western regions.

Various economic components together formed China Top 1,000 Industrial Enterprises. Among them 312 are state-owned enterprises, 291 are stock companies and limited liability companies and 332 are foreign-invested companies and companies with investment from HK, Macao and China's Taiwan. Collective companies, shareholding cooperative companies and private-run companies, though small in number, are nevertheless listed.
