"Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" earned 34.9 million US dollars over the weekend to continue its rule at North America box office for the second week, according to final figures released Monday.
The third Harry Potter movie based on J.K. Rowling's books about a young wizard has grossed 157.9 million dollars since its release, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
Universal Pictures' new movie "The Chronicles of Riddick," starring Vin Diesel, opened in second place over the weekend, earning about 24.2 million dollars.
Meanwhile, Dreamworks' cartoon hit "Shrek 2" earned 23.3 million dollars over the weekend to unseat "Finding Nemo" as the No. 1 cartoon movie.
"Shrek 2" has so far grossed 353.3 million dollars in four weeks of release, smashing the 339.7-million-dollar record set by "Finding Nemo" last year.
Two new debuts, 20th Century Fox's "Garfield" took the No. 4 place by earning 21.7 million dollars, ahead of Paramount's "The Stepford Wives" starring Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, which earned 21.4 million dollars.
In sixth place was "The Day After Tomorrow" (14.5 million dollars), followed by "Raising Helen" (3.7 million dollars), Troy"(3.4 million dollars), "Saved" (2.5 million dollars) and "Mean Girls" (1.4 million dollars).
