EU continues to consider lifting arms embargo on China
font size

The European Union (EU) asked the EU Council to continue its consideration of lifting EU arms embargo on China, said the Presidency Conclusions issued by the EU summit on Friday.

"The European Council invites the (EU) Council to continue its consideration of the arms embargo in the context of the EU's overall relations with China," said the document.

The summit reiterated its commitment to pursue its strategic partnership with China "based on shared understanding and dialogue," it said.

The EU summit in December 2003 started to request the EU Council to review the lifting of arms embargo on China, and the committee of the permanent representatives under the EU Council and EU foreign ministers' meeting since then have reviewed the lifting on several occasions.
