Arab League chief criticizes UN Mideast envoy for remarks
font size

Amr Moussa, secretary general of Arab League, rapped UN Mideast envoy Terje Roed-Larsen on Thursday for his remarks on the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).

"Any report issued by the United Nations should be balanced as regards obligations and requirements," Moussa told reporters, commenting on Larsen's briefing at a UN session on Wednesday.

"Israel has to be held responsible for destruction it was creating in the Palestinian lands," Moussa said.

He said what happened between Larsen and the PNA will not affect the UN role in the Mideast peace process.

During the briefing, Larsen accused the PNA of failing to make any progress on a commitment to taking an immediate decision on the ground to end violence and combat terror.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei on Thursday hit back at Larsen as "non-objective."

"Larsen's criticism was non-objective because he has equaled the Palestinian victim with the Israeli aggressor," Qurei said in a statement.

Qurei also called on UN chief Kofi Annan "to direct his employees who serve in the Palestinian territories to practice their job objectively and in harmony with principles of the international organization."
