Charles Jenkins by the end of this week over charges against the former deserter, Kyodo News reported Monday.
He is facing four charges including desertion, aiding the enemy, encouraging disloyalty and soliciting other service members to desert, Kyodo quoted government sources as saying.
Jenkins, 64, arrived in Tokyo from Jakarta on July 18, along with his Japanese wife Hitomi Soga and their two daughters. He has since been receiving medical treatment at a Tokyo hospital. The doctors said he is not in a serious condition.
Jenkins deserted to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in 1965 when serving US Army in South Korea, and later married Soga who was among eight Japanese the DPRK acknowledged to abduct in 1970s and 1980s.
The United States has yet to grant an amnesty which Tokyo is calling for.
