Beijing Olympic organizers make no changes to overall budget
font size

Liu Jingmin, executive vice president of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), denied Thursday that Beijing has cut budget for the venues to be built for the Olympic Games.

The denial came amid speculations that BOCOG had cut the budget for the venue construction after the recent suspension of the Chinese National Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics competitions will be held in the Olympics.

"It's not the changes to whole venue budget but to the budgets of some venues," Liu told a press conference.

"Our total budget for newly-built venues will remain 1.6 to 2 billion US dollars raised long time ago and we have made no changes to it."

Reports said the suspension of the National Stadium was because a re-evaluation of the design showed that the cost of the project might explode.

"There are no big changes to the overall situation, and we just made some small changes and suspended only a small number of venues," Liu told reporters.
