China's Shi Zhiyong defeated his compatriot Le Maosheng and his own limit to win the men's weightlifting 62kg category gold medal at the 28th Olympic Games on August 16 evening.
The Chinese hercules snatched 152.5kg and jerked 172.5kg for a winning total of 325kg, a world record mark set by the International Weightlifting Federation.
His two-lift beats Le Maosheg, world record holder in the jerk,to the second at 312.5kg with 140 from snatch and 172.5 from jerk while Greek Leonidas Sampanis, who snatched 145 and jerked 167.5, had to contend with the bronze medal also at 312.5kgs due to bodyweight difference.
Shi Zhiyong established his winning trend in the snatch, lifted 147.5 in his first trial and improved the barbell to 152.5kg in his third lift, taking a 7.5kg advantage to the jerk.
Shi, silver medalist at the World Championships in Vancouver, Canada last year, had been regarded as an underdog to his teammate Le, who is famous for his Mohican-style haircut.
Le, who surprised many by winning the world championships in Athens in 1999, pushed hard to the limit, bidding for a world record weight of 185kg in his third jerk, but he could not lift the barbell over his head.
