Chinese pairs Guo Yue/Niu Jianfeng and Wang Nan/Zhang Yining sailed through their Chinese Taipei and Italian opponents easily to enter the quarterfinals of women's doubles in the table tennis tournament of the 2004 Athens Olympiad here Monday evening.

Both pairs outclassed their rivals 4-0. The scores in each game were 11-9, 11-4, 11-6 and 11-2 for Guo/Niu, who beat Chinese Taipei's Huang I-Hua/Lu Yun-Feng, and 11-6, 11-3, 12-10 and 14-12 for Wang/Zhang, who defeated Italy's Nikoleta Stefanova/Tan Monfardini Wenling.

The Chinese pairs were the first two to qualify for the last 8 of women's doubles.

Their matches were also the Olympic debut in Athens for the star-studded Chinese table tennis team, whose 9 players all enjoyed a bye in the first two days of the tournament due to their high seedings.
