font size

Wrestler Khasan Baroev from Russia grabbed the men's Greco-Roman 120kg gold medal at the Athens Olympics in Athens on August 25 evening, beating Georgiy Tsurtsumia from Kazakhstan 4-2 in the final.

This was the second wrestling gold medal gained by Russia, the powerhouse of the wrestling, at the ongoing Olympic Games.

Baroev, 22, the gold medalist at the 2003 world championships, trailed 2-0 only 30 seconds to go.

Then, he captured a scoring chance, hugging the waist of Tsurtsumia, the gold medalist of 2004 Asian championships, and knocking him down to the mat.

The sudden and beautiful movement earned all together four points for Baroev, which secured his victory.

American Rulon Gardner, 33, the Olympic champion in Sydney and the gold medalist at the 2001 worlds in Greece, took the bronze.

Gardner, the top favorite of the class, beat Iranian Sajad Barzi, 23, the bronze medalist of 2004 Asian championships and the first placer in the Olympic qualification tournament, 3-0 in the bronze medal fight.

The winner of a game must get at least three points in the regular time, otherwise a three-minute extra fight is needed.
